Whatsapp messenger is one of the world’s most popular messaging applications and has an over 2 billion user base as of the February 2020 report. It provides end-to-end encryption with cross-platform centralized instant messaging and voice-over IP(VoIP) service. You can send text and audio messages, and share images, documents, contacts, and user locations with this messenger. Making audio and video calls using the internet is also a part of Whatsapp messenger. You may be thinking that what’s new about it? We all use Whatsapp messenger on our smartphones and is integrated with our contact number. But do you know Whatsapp messenger can also be accessed from the desktop or PC using Whatsapp Web?

But, before we go through its application in detail, let’s first understand what Whatsapp web is all about?

What and why is Whatsapp Web?

As previously mentioned Whatsapp messenger is so developed that it will get integrated with the contact number you are using for yourself and the application need to be installed into the smartphone itself. But in January 2015, the company launched the web version of Whatsapp. So that the users while working on their desktop and laptops, can access WhatsApp easily from a single screen.

Thus Whatsapp web is nothing but a replica or duplicate version of mobile WhatsApp. It can be simply accessed from any web browser such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Opera browser, and so on. In the same way, Whatsapp has also developed a targetted desktop application for Mac and Windows PC.

How to use Whatsapp web?

To use Whatsapp Web, just follow the steps mentioned below.

  1. Open any browser from your desktop or laptop computer, and navigate to web version of Whatsapp.
  2. Once the web portal of Whatsapp opens up, it will prompt with an QR code, similar to the picture shown below.

  1. Then open the WhatsApp application on your phone and tap the three dot menu on the top-right corner of the application. Then select the “Linked devices” option. If the device is not linked before with the current web version of Whatsapp, then click on the “Link a device” tab on the next window and allow your phone camera to scan the QR code on the next step.

After you successfully scan the QR code on the next step as shown on the browser by the Whatsapp web, you will be able to migrate to the web version of Whatsapp. You can access whatsapp on your desktop or laptop screen, no need to switch the screen for checking the messages or chatting with someone else.

After you log in to your Whatsapp account, all the previous messages which are synchronized with your phone will be able to view them on the web portal.

However, if you are using Mac or Windows PC, then you may opt for the desktop application too.

Difference between Whatsapp Web and desktop application?

There are a few differences between the web version and the desktop version. The functioning and the login process are similar to that of the web version. The major difference is that the voice and video call option is currently available on the desktop version but not on the web version. Still, Whatsapp is in the beta stage and constantly upgrading its features and options. Hope we will find options in the web version too.

Unlike Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp web messenger don’t let its user make voice and video call, not even in groups. But hope to see lots more from the Whatsapp team in the upcoming days. But with the web version, you can even log in to your Whatsapp account even from any cyber cafe or from the office without installing any application on the system. Just don’t forget to uncheck the “Keep me signed in” option. Even if you forget to uncheck that option, you may log out any other device login from your smartphone WhatsApp account. But that is necessary when you are using other’s computers to secure your account and stop unauthorized access.
