Installing or running a live operating system from a bootable pen drive is a very common practice nowadays. And creating a bootable pen drive is necessary to use it as a bootable drive. There are several software or applications available online to make your pen drive into a bootable drive. Among them, Rufus is a very popular one. Rufus downloads and its use is very simple and easy.
How to install the Rufus downloads?
Using Rufus is not a difficult task at all. All you need to do is to download and install the Rufus software from its official page. The application is very small in size. The latest version published on its official page is 3.15 and it is approximately 1.1MB in size. The portable version is also available, which requires no installation. And most importantly, Rufus is completely free to use.
How to use Rufus to create a bootable pen drive?
To use the Rufus to create a bootable pen drive you must have the ISO file of the operating system of which you want to create the bootable drive, which needs to be present in your local drive. If not, then you need to download the ISO file of the respective operating system.
You need to insert the pen drive, which you want to create the bootable disk. The thumb drive(s) connected with the system, will show under the Device field. Then you need to select the downloaded ISO file of the operating system.
Currently, Windows 11 official release is not very far and if you are planning to upgrade your system to Windows 11, by installing the operating system from the ISO file, then Rufus will help you out to create the bootable drive.
If you are not familiar with the partition schemes and the Target system types, then you need not have to change the fields. Rufus will select the appropriate one.
When everything is ok, Rufus will show Ready status below. Simply click on the Start button to launch the application to perform its task of creating the bootable pen drive with the ISO image file of the operating system provided.
Before you start the application, please confirm to take a backup of the pen drive, used for creating the bootable drive. Because, it will erase or format the drive, before creating the bootable drive.
Why to Rufus is preferrable than others?
As per the speed comparison result published on the Rufus official website, in comparison to other applications with which you can create bootable disks, such as, universal USB Installer, UNetbootin, RMPrepUSB, etc. Among all of them, Rufus took the least time, to create the bootable drive.
How to install the operating system from the bootable drive created with Rufus?
Once the bootable drive is created using Rufus, you need to restart the system, which you want to boot. While restarting, either enter into the BIOS setting or directly keyed into the bootable media selection menu. If you enter into the BIOS setting you may set the 1st booting option as USB and then the 2nd boot option as HDD or SSD. If you do so, don’t forget to remove the bootable pen drive from your system, when the installation is over. Else, every time it will ask you to run the installation of the operating system. Entering into BIOS setting, need to press either F2 or F12 or DEL or F1 or F10 keys. It depends on the Mother Board manufacturer.
Alternatively, you can directly enter into the boot menu and choose USB as the first booting device. For accessing the boot menu directly, common keys are F10, F12, F2, or Esc. It also depends on the motherboard manufacturer.
Once you select the appropriate pen drive as the bootable media, your boot will start and then you need to install the operating system accordingly.
However, if you trying to install two or more Windows operating systems and have messed up the intallation process. Your previous version is not showing in the boot menu, then can easily configure the bootloader in Windows PC using EasyBCD.

To conclude, it is to be said that Rufus is really a simple, good, and trustworthy application for creating your bootable media. Even a not technical person could easily create a bootable drive using this application. However, the installation of the operating system into your system may require some technical knowledge.
Most of the Linux providers are giving the option to use it as a live disk, where no installation is required. You can directly use the operating system, from the bootable drive.
If the bootable drive is created using Rufus, then also you can enjoy the benefit of the live disk feature of Linux.
